If you prefer warm water, fun, small surf, Punta de Mita can be perfect. Consistent year round, lots of different breaks, very safe to bring the family, and not very far from most major cities in western North America. If you give yourself at least 10 days, chances are you'll score a good swell.
Punta de Mita has several excellent breaks within walking distance of town. “Anclote” (5 minute walk) is ideal for beginners and longboarders and is right in front of the restaurants. Walking further to the north you will find an excellent right point "El Faro" which is a very rocky reef. Just around the tip of the headlands is another fun rock reef called "the cove". If you walk to the south from the Inn, after 30 minutes you will find "La Lancha" which is good for all abilities about 300 days a year.
The access to some of the more uncrowded waves in the area takes some local knowledge due to private ownership of land. All the beaches in Mexico themselves however, are public land so you can walk along the beach freely.
If you normally don't like to carry your board farther than your metered parking space 50 feet to the sand, renting a car or boat to access the advanced breaks will be most convenient. If beginner, longboardable or intermediate surf is what you're after and you're reasonably fit for surfing, there are 5 spots you can walk to from town. You can check 3 spots from the roof and we will be happy to show you the shortcuts/parking to the more advanced surf. If you decide to stay in the village of Punta Mita, 90% of your "transportation to the best surf in the area" is solved (compared to staying in Vallarta, Bucerias, Sayulita or San Pancho where most of your surf trip will involve getting to Mita).
This is the nearest surf break to us, a 2 min walk!! It's a gentle beginner break that works with very little swell. To the right are the islas Marietas and to the left in the distance are the mountains in southern Vallarta.
