Ice Cream & Fresh Coconuts

The ice cream man here drives a purple Ford Escort with glitter. He goes around town every day from about 2pm. You’ll hear the music. You can also get ice cream from Supermercado and OXXO and a few tiendas in town. On our side of town there is an ice cream shop near the plaza.
In general Mexican ice cream sucks- get the fruit bars (which are amazing) or choco bananas instead. The tiendas have all the nestle and commerical brands. An exception to the norm is the ice cream guy on the beach who wheels his tiny wheelbarrow along the sand and behind the restaurants each day. Really nice homemade ice cream; he never has chocolate but the coconut and vanilla are great.

About 3 blocks away is an ice cream factory which makes top quality ice cream and desserts for all the high end restaurants on the peninsula. They do sell to the public and have world class ice cream in exotic fruit flavors or spices as well as the basics of chocolate, vanilla, mango, mint, etc. They are called NAEF cuisine and a liter will cost about 8-10 dollars (100-130 pesos or so). They sometimes sell in smaller quantities. They’re open everyday- just ring the bell or yell buenas tardes from the gate until someone answers. They are a few lots away from the hardware store (ferreteria) towards the highway. http://naef.com.mx

Fresh Coconuts are sold everywhere in summer
look for signs that say “cocos helados” Right at the marina under Oscar’s surf rental palapa his wife has been doing coconuts and cold pineapple drinks. At restaurant El Coral, they almost always have fresh cold coconuts also. They are also sold along the road to Higuera Blanca.
